At a time when the entertainment industry faces a landscape of exponential complexity, studios are dedicating more resources to leveraging machine intelligence to develop more granular insights into their market. The availability of rich data and research on the mechanics of cognition on one side, and advanced computing paradigms on the other, promises to take those who experiment with it into a deeper understanding of film audiences. But the road to AI-driven decisions in media is intricate, and a lot of questions remain. This talk aims at answering these basic questions about what machine intelligence is and what industry problems it can be applied to by looking at concrete examples of AI methods and tools developed for the entertainment industry inside of USC’s Entertainment Technology Center. At ETC, Yves Bergquist (director of the “AI & Neuroscience in Media” Project) and his team have been working for the past two years to architect and prototype advanced AI applications to create a deeper understanding of the cognitive relationship between film stories and film audiences, and what narrative structures in film correlate to more popularity. Yves will unveil the results of his team’s research (which is funded by all 6 Hollywood studios and major tech companies) and demonstrate a few AI applications he’s been working on which promise to change the way the industry thinks about its product and audiences.
